History
In the late 1960's, Urban Street Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina was burdened that there was not an independent Baptist Church in the King, North Carolina area. This burden became a reality when on Sunday, January 19, 1969, eight local pastor and fifteen others organized the Calvary Baptist Church.
The purchase and renovation of a restaurant on Old Highway 52 served as the first church building with Maurice Wheat as the first pastor. Pastor Wheat was called to Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, so Pastor James Scott answered the call of the church and became the second pastor. Under his leadership the church experienced growth and many blessings. In 1974, Charles Peters became the pastor. At that time, the Sunday School was averaging approximately ninety (90).
In March of 1976 the church extended the call to Roger Baker. Pastor Baker was saved on his 22nd birthday when Pastor George Law led him to the Lord at his home, along with his wife, Diane in Newport News, Virginia. One and a half years later he was called to preach and moved to Winston-Salem to attend Piedmont Baptist College. At Piedmont Pastor Baker earned a Bachelor of Theology degree in 1976, and a Master of Arts in 2000. He was given an honorary Doctorate degree from Ambassador Baptist College in May, 2004. Pastor Baker and his wife celebrated 28 years of ministry in March, 2004.
In 1977, the church purchased approximately six acres of property on Spainhour Road and began a building program. The congregation moved into the new church building in January of 1978. In the consequent years, the church began to grow, not only in member numbers, but in ministries as well. A Christian school was founded in 1982 and in 1988 Pastor Baker founded Calvary Baptist Bible College to train men to be pastors and missionaries.
In August of 2000, Calvary began a new building program with the purchase of the old Ingles Grocery Store on Main Street in King. This building would provide 32,000 square feet and 14 acres of land for the church minis tires and the Bible college. In August of 2001, the church moved into the new facility. Our Sunday School/Sunday Morning attendance is averaging over eight hundred thirty (830) and growing.
God has blessed us in many ways. Souls are being saved and folks are uniting with us on a regular basis. We look forward to the future as it is exciting to see what God has planned for us at Calvary. We also look forward to you becoming a part of our church family and the ministries at Calvary. |
